The 8th Santo Nino de Agosto Fiesta

This year’s Santo Niño de Agosto fiesta was again held at St. Genevieve Church, located at 4835 W. Altgeld Avenue, Chicago, IL. 60639 last August 16, Saturday, 2008.

The solemn and festive event as usual drew a very big crowd.  At 9:30 A.M. the devotional prayers were said, followed by the presentation of the 18 participating Santo Nino/Devotional Groups from different parishes and the Holy sacrifice of the Mass.  The angelic voices of the Filipino singers of the Holy Name Cathedral under the direction of Mr. Vicente Vellarde, Jr. with organist Aurora Cortes added to the solemnity of the celebration.

Rev. Leoncio S. Santiago, the charismatic pastor of St. Genevieve Church was the main celebrant.  He was assisted by his Associate Pastor Rev. Joaquin Garcia, a visiting priest from Europe and his Deacon Tony Delgado.   A good homilist, the congregation was captivated by Fr. Santiago’s inspiring message.  “And a Child Shall Lead Them” is this year’s theme of the Santo Niño de Agosto movement.

Fr. Santiago’s sense of humor, kept the congregation alert all the time.

The weather cooperated. It was pleasant, though sunny.  The 6 blocks outdoor procession was over before we knew it.

Lunch was served at Maher Hall after the police escorted procession.  The congregation was entertained by the Chicago Angklung & Rondalla Ensemble (CARE) with their renditions of some of the famous Philippine music; it was very nostalgic.  Native dances were presented by some of the participating groups enthralling the audience.

Raffle drawings were drawn with cash prizes.  The 1st prize of $150.00 was won by Madison White, the 2nd prize of $100.00 was won by Diding Cervano and the 3rd prize of $50.00 by Lu Alog.

The friendly altares competition inspired the participating groups to be more creative and artistic in their search for the spiritual.  The winners for the Most Artistic category went to St. Peter’s Church of Skokie (Santo Niño in the Garden), the Most Original category to the BISCA (Bisaya Circle of America) group, the Most Creative to Santo Niño of South DuPage (Prince of Peace) and Santo Niño / Mother Cabrini Prayer Group, the Best Presentation category went to Sto. Niño of the Midwest

The fiesta was a joyous gathering of so many people and when it was time to go home, everybody was looking forward to next year’s Santo Nino de Agosto celebration on August 15, 2009 (3rd Saturday).

The Santo Niño de Agosto Steering Committee headed by Hermana Mayor Luz Ong, Asst. Hermana Mayores, Lu Alog and Sol Anderson express our sincerest thanks and gratitude to all our celebrants, sponsors, benefactors,  participants for your continued prayers, cooperation, generosity and support.  Hermano(a)s Post fiesta meeting will be on September 7, 2008 (Sunday) at 2:30 PM at Burger King, Campbell & Lawrence.
