Mayor Evelyn Uy makes a deal with Nonong
Jalosjos |
|
|
|
It could be like the usual politics lingo:
Ako ang Ciudad, imo ang provincia. Congressman Cesar Jalosjos of the 3rd
district recently confirmed reports that Dipolog City Mayor Evelyn Uy
met with his brother, the former congressman Nonong Jalosjos, three
weeks ago. He disclosed that the meeting defined the political territory
with the lady mayor assuring the former congressman that her family
would be concentrating on Dipolog and would not mess with the province
anymore.
 |
|
As of the moment, Mayor Angel Carloto of Gutalac and Mayor Jaime
Lim of Liloy have already taken their oath of allegiance to the
Alliance of Parties for Progress. |
The meeting of the duo, Cong. Jalosjos
disclosed further, was also a disclosure of the plan of the Uy's to
field the former City Mayor Roberto Uy for mayoralty post again.
However, Gov. Rolando Yebes was reportedly doubtful on the sincerity of
the lady mayor. Cong. Jalosjos pointed out Yebes could have learned a
lesson the last elections where the Uy’s earlier pledged them of their
support only to find out later that they had opposed them.
But said meeting of both leaders shall still be followed
up with more future encounters by the leaders of the Alliance of Parties
for Progress, the 3rd district representative disclosed. He also
disclosed that today, October 14, Mayor Angel Carloto of Gutalac and
Mayor Jaime Lim of Liloy shall take their oath of allegiance to the
Alliance of Parties for Progress.

DPL cemetery - no vacancy |
|
 |
|
Even in the final resting place, the poor
cannot have a small plot we can call our ‘last home’. Community
Development Assistance Unit Chief Ronilo Pacilan recently expressed his
dismay when Dipolog City Hall refused to give a Burial Permit for a
member of Lando BIBO from Sta. Isabel. The CDAU Chief disclosed that
Barangay Captain Pacifico Agustin earlier refused to issue a certificate
certifying that Noriebert Ocampo who committed suicide was an indigent.
|
 |
|
The suicide victim Noriebert Ocampo who was an indigent and a
member of Lando BIBO is denied by the city government the proper
burial rights. |
The said certificate was needed so that the
family of Ocampo could get a burial permit from the office of the city
mayor, so that they could bury him at the city-owned public cemetery at
Barangay Gulayon. As usual, Pacilan disclosed, he had to arrange the
burial since the dead man was a Lando BIBO member. He personally called
the City Health Office but claimed he was advised by an employee that
the office could not issue medico legal, not unless all applications are
screened by City Hall.
When he was advised to call Mrs. Lourdes Pabilona,
Pacilan disclosed, he was just told that the public cemetery had already
been closed since it was already full. It was learned that the family
was ready to pay so that they could lay their dead to rest but in answer
they were asked a certificate of indigence. However, Pacilan said, when
Barangay Captain Agustin learned that the dead man was a Lando BIBO
member, they were refused. “It’s difficult when you are an indigent and
you die – Dipolog has no place for you,” CDAU Chief Pacilan sadly
commented. (Press Freedom, Vol.

Chinese investors show interest in ZN |
|
 |
|
President Gloria M. Arroyo recently invited
interests from the Chinese investors when she told them about Zamboanga
del Norte among the best investment destinations in Mindanao. This was
disclosed by Gov. Rolando Yebes after his trip with the president to
China. In round-table business conference in Shanghai, China, the
governor felt the interests of Chinese businessmen in mineral mining and
tourism.
Although their interest learned more on
mineral mining, he clarified before them that he was not against mining
as long as standards observed by the mining companies in Europe and
America are also strictly followed, in the province. Among those
interested to visit the province included business tycoon Lucio Tan and
his wife who showed interest in tourism.
The provincial governor was part of the president’s
retinue who visited China last week. The governor received the
invitation for the trip when PGMA visited the province to inaugurate the
ZaNorte Medical Center on September 18. Another country visited by
PGMA’s group was India where they planned to procure cheaper medicines
in order to strengthen the president’s program on Botika sa Barangay.

Yebes allocates funds for 10K-capacity Cultural and Sports Center |
|
 |
|
The Provincial Government of Zamboanga del
Norte under the good leadership of its multi-awarded Governor Rolando
Yebes is now allocating millions of funds for another huge project the
ZaNorte Cultural and Sports Center that will soon rise next year at the
location of the old cultural center.
In an interview with the members of the
Zamboanga del Norte United correspondents (ZNUC) at Kapihan sa 1948,
October 12, Saturday, Governor Yebes proudly stressed out his plan to
build up a 10K-capacity cultural and sports center when the ZaNorte
Medical Center will fully operational where he is now concentrating the
completion of requirements for the Department of Health.
He, however emphasized that the said project
is also one of his ultimate dreams for the ZaNorteans who are longing to
have a cultural center for their activities, seminars and other
functions.
The project will be a dome type where the
first level is ready for lease to all interested individuals who are
planning to put up businesses and some portions of the building will be
utilized as function rooms for birthdays, weddings and seminars. The
second floor will be the cultural and sports center with a rubberized
basketball court that can accommodate 10,000 spectators.
“I already planned this project when I
assumed my position as provincial governor because I felt distress when
the past administration did not continue erecting the cultural center
and just wasting 10 million pesos for the pos s itself’ Gov. Yebes
disclosed.
The governor now is saving and allocating
funds for the said project and solicit assistance from President Gloria
Macapagal Arroyo who’s very sympathetic for the undertakings of Gov.
Yebes in the province.
As recalled, because of various accomplishments of the
provincial governor particularly battling the poverty situations of his
constituents through the Poverty Mapping Program and his numerous
infrastructure projects in 25 municipalities and 2 cities and help boost
the tourism industry of ZaNorte, truly fit his battle cry “Una sa Tanan
ang Katawhan” that made him the 2007 Presidential Gawad Lingkod Bayan
awardee. (Buddy Cagbabanua,

YEBES, BARRIOS NAMED OUSTANDING PUBLIC
OFFICIALS |
|
 |
|
After becoming a Gawad Lingkod Bayan awardee,
Zamboanga del Norte Governor Rolando Yebes accepted another prestigious
award from the Civil Service Commission Friday, September 28, 2007.
Yebes was named Outstanding Personnel
Administrator in the whole of region 9 with the province’s Human
Resource Management Officer Aurelia Barrios, who was also awarded as the
Outstanding Human Resource Management Officer at the City Health Office
Conference Hall, Petit Barracks, Zamboanga City.
“I feel elated,” Barrios said in an
interview. Speaking in behalf of the governor, Barrios said they were
nominated by the Civil Service Commission as the provincial government
implemented and accomplished various programs qualified for the search
of outstanding officials.
In July, Yebes realized the 10 percent wage
hike for regular and casual provincial government employees, among
others.
Barrios asserted that although her office is
only a division of the Governor’s Office unlike other departments in the
provincial capitol, they were “able to manage the Human Resource
Management Office as a department in accordance with the Civil Service
Commission rules.”
Barrios advised dedication and love of work.
“Service to fellowmen is service to God,” is Barrios’ pledge as she
entered government service.
“It might not be the best for others, but
for me, I did my best for this award,” Barrios added.
Barrios served the government for 26 years and started as
a casual employee. Civil Service Commission celebrates its 107th
anniversary with the theme, “Itaguyod ang Kasarinlan ng Career Service,”
which aims to uplift the identity and structure of the career service as
a distinct institution. (By

PSI Sasuman: ‘I was never dictated by Mayor
Belen’
|
|
 |
|
Saddened by now the local media picture him
after he led the raid of an alleged swertres financier recently, Police
Senior Inspector Isidro Sasuman of the Dipolog Police Office stressed he
had never acted on order by Dipolog City Mayor Evelyn Uy. “I would
rather resign from office if found that I was dictated by the city
mayor,” the Dipolog OIC Chief said. In a recent press conference, the
police inspector was sadly reacting to a local media man’s comment
seemingly picturing him as the city mayor’s ‘sunod sunoran’ after
raiding Ricky Olvis, a suspected swertres financier.
He disclosed that he was just acting as what
any police officer should do and this has been always a part of the
DCPO’s campaign against illegal gambling and not because of anyone’s
order. On the other hand, Mayor Evelyn Uy pointed out that the recent
raid was an action of the police and she had never dictated it. She
claimed she only suggested the direction of the DCPO’s campaign against
crimes and gambling and denied reports she had pushed Sasuman to do the
raid.
The police inspector also claimed he had
never held any ‘small notebook’ from the suspect’s residence which
listed prominent persons who received ‘suborno’ from Olvis. When asked
why other financiers were left untouched by the police, the inspector
reasoned that it just happened that Olvis was the first one.
As regards speculations that a high ranking Police
Officials tried to intervene during the Olvis raid, the inspector
disclosed that he was undertaking the operating without the knowledge of
the Provincial Police Director. It can be remembered PSI Sasuman was
designated OIC of the DCPO after Inspector Reynaldo Maclang was relieved
from his post and assigned to the ZNPPO at Sicayab, Dipolog City.

ZaNorte talents wow Zamboanga del Sur crowd |
|
 |
|
It’s more than a jovial fete, a vibrant
affair and a one-of-a-kind extravaganza that showcased a variety of fine
talents from Zamboanga del Norte’s pride.
The celebration of Megayon Festival twinned
with the Zamboanga Peninsula Regional Tourism showcase in Pagadian City
offers a great opportunity to the young and energetic talents coming
from the academe, organized group and non-government sector of the
province of Zamboanga del Norte as they showed their distinctive
performances in a form of a variety show during its cultural
presentation.
More than a hundred participants in diverse
expertise opened the show with colorful costumes chanting the official
Department of Tourism theme song, Biyahe Na!
The crowd truly astounded as they gazed the
skilled movers and tuneful singers in their matchless rendition with
versatility.
Showing their individual singing prowess,
the song birds from Dipolog Medical Center College Foundation (Progeny
of Euterpe) beyond doubt amused everyone as they imitated the voices of
some Hollywood singing superstars.
Matchless as it may seem, the dance troupe from Saint
Vincent’s College and an organized group of young dancers who emerged
winner during the recently concluded Hudyaka ZaNorte Festivity showed
their dance shindig. (By:

YEBES URGES PCGA TO PROTECT MARINE RESOURCES |
|
 |
|
Governor Rolando Yebes of Zamboanga del
Norte was looking forward for the big help from 1008th Philippine Coast
Guard Auxiliary (PCGA) in protecting seas particularly in our province.
This was disclosed by Gov.Yebes during his
inspirational message in the induction and activation of 1008th PCGA
held in Liloy, Zamboanga del Norte last October 7, 2007 which was
attended by dignitaries and members of PCGA.
Gov. Yebes challenged the two commanders of
PCGA from ZaNorte namely Board Members Joseph Brendo Ajero and Anecito
Darunday to instantaneously pass a resolution to the Sangguniang
Panlalawigan specifically in taking actions in protecting marine
sanctuaries in the province and protect seas from illegal fishers
penetrating the ZaNorte fishing areas.
The governor also encouraged PCGA to help in
the security and protection of passengers coming in and out of Zamboanga
del Norte so as to make an impression to the different shipping
companies including local and international tourists visiting ZaNorte
that the province is a secured place.
“I’m expecting more from PCGA to help
protect our seas in ZaNorte because I am also keen in helping the
livelihood of our local fisher folks” Yebes added.
Congressman Cesar Jalosjos at the same time
District Commander of PCGA was very positive that more developments be
given from PCGA in Dipolog and Dapitan because he believes that these
two cities have various marine sanctuaries that need protection.
Commander Edgardo De Vera, PCGA District Commander of
Northern Mindanao graced the occasion as guest speaker.

COMELEC dismisses case against Jun-jun
Jalosjos |
|
 |
|
No way. Supporters of Tampilisan mayor Romeo
‘Jun-jun’ Jalosjos, Jr. could just wave their finger in the air as
COMELEC en banc dropped the disqualification case filed against him.
Earlier, Mayor Angeles Carloto II filed a disqualification against
Jalosjos for non-residency considering that the former resided in Liloy.
However, Jalosjos’ lawyer pointed out that his client’s registration to
Tampilisan was an indication of his intention to reside in Tampilisan.
Moreover, the lawyer pointed out, such
application was approved by the Election Registration Board. Such
approval, he said, could be had only if residency in Tampilisan was
established by the ERB. Moreover, the mayor’s participation in the
recent elections had proved the applicant’s intention to reside in
Tampilisan. The COMELEC en banc ruled that the applicant had already
resided in Tampilisan 10 month prior to his application for transfer
because he was involved in agriculture and micro financing business.
In its resolution, the commission pointed out further
that whenever the residence qualification of a candidate to an elective
position is in question, the rights of the winning candidate shall have
been defended and that the judgment of the people who voted for him
shall have been respected. It also made it clear that the purpose of
elections is to affect the will of the people and not to disregard it.
Contrary to the first resolution of COMELEC Second Division, the
Commission approved the motion for reconsideration filed by Mayor
Jalosjos, dismissing the disqualification on the ground of residence
qualification. (Press Freedom,

Chevy Centre celebrates 32nd anniversary |
|
 |
|
Chevy Centre recently celebrated its 32nd
year anniversary on October 2, 2007. This year’s celebration was a
special one for both its management and employees as the company
officially launched its tree-planting activity project called Plant the
Planet Program in Barangay Alvenda, Mutia, Zamboanga del Norte in time
for its anniversary. Plant the Planet is Chevy Centre’s banner program
to help promote a clean environment. The program specifically aims to
help offset carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and raise awareness on the
causes, effects and remedies of global warming.
|
 |
|
According to Engr. Rolando Soliva, general manager and proprietor
of Chevy Centre, ‘We want to support a cause that is relevant to our
society and closely or directly aligned to the nature of our
business, which is automotive.’ |
Plant the Planet was a deliberately chosen
and planned program, not a random “feel-good” activity. According to
Rolando Soliva, general manager and proprietor of Chevy Centre, ‘We want
to support a cause that is relevant to our society and closely or
directly aligned to the nature of our business, which is automotive.’
Soliva continued to explain that cars are responsible for most of our
carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere, contributing to global
warming or climate change, and the most effective way to offset carbon
dioxide is by planting trees as they will absorb it and convert to
oxygen.
Plant the Planet appropriately carries a
clear and loud slogan: We care for our planet: Reduce carbon, plant a
tree today. According to Soliva, they want to engage their stakeholders
to participate in this activity. ‘We want our customers, suppliers and
employees to have a readily available channel for them to contribute to
the environment. This may be through seedling donations, or assistance
in the activity proper.’ Corporate social responsibility (CSR), which
can be simply defined as the obligation of business to give back to
society, has been a core value of Chevy Centre. As early as 1987, Chevy
Centre started planting trees in various areas in the province. Although
done with a noble purpose, these were unfortunately unconsolidated and
isolated activities of the company that were prompted by the owner’s
passion for environmental conservation.
Among its earlier CSR activities is the SALT
(Sloping Agricultural Land Technology) Project also in Alvenda, Mutia.
Through the SALT Project, Chevy Centre seeks to demonstrate how farmers
can properly cultivate sloping agricultural lands in a way that
increases agricultural productivity without eroding the topsoil. Chevy
Centre also donated one hectare of land to LGU Mutia where the
infrastructure for their water system is constructed. The surrounding
area of around eight hectares, which is owned by Chevy Centre, is still
forested and being preserved and maintained in such a way that wildlife
and freshwater supply are sustained for today and for the future
generations.
“We want to put “color” in our company,” Soliva said when
asked why they are doing CSR. ‘We believe that making profit and doing
well to our society can go together. This endeavor requires commitment
and some creativity, but we are up for the challenge.’ Soliva also
encourages local businesses to develop their own CSR programs and extend
assistance to our government towards achieving sustainable development.
Chevy Centre wishes to thank those who participated in their Plant the
Planet program, namely their customers, suppliers, employees, various
government agencies, the LGU of Mutia, and public officials. (Press Freedom, Vol. XIX

Yebes supports ZANDIDAP Council for the
National Jamboree |
|
 |
|
The ZaNorte Governor Rolando Yebes has
recently donated PhP100,000 pesos as financial assistance for the
ZaNorte-Dipolog-Dapitan (ZANDIDAP) delegates in the 2007 Boy Scout
National Jamboree held in Mt. Makiling, Los Baños, Laguna.
Governor Yebes, as Provincial and Regional
Council Chairman of the Boy Scout of the Philippines ZANDIDAP Chapter
has always been very kindhearted to the council in terms of financial
support in various scouting activities in the province including
regional and national activities.
In an interview by the members of the
Zamboanga del Norte United Correspondents (ZNUC) last October 13,
Saturday at Kapihan sa 1948 weekend program, Mr. Roy Garbonera, Council
Scout Executive told ZNUC members that he was so flattered of the
continued assistance of Gov. Yebes to the ZANDIDAP council in various
activities both local, regional and national activities of boy scouting.
It was learned that ZANDIDAP’s delegation
for the National Jamboree has 150 young and adult boy scouts
representing the 25 municipalities and 2 cities of Zamboanga del Norte
including their school teachers as chaperons.
Meanwhile, the said council has initial
funds worth 1M pesos from the provincial government and donations from
the members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of their Provincial
Identification Funds for the construction of a two-storey ZANDIDAP
building that will soon rise near the ZN National High School.
It is also worth knowing that because of the joint effort
and very organized council officials and the excellent supervision of
Gov. Yebes for the ZANDIDAP, made them one of the TOP 30 Best Boy Scout
Council of the Philippines.

COMELEC: Reassignment of officials strictly
prohibited |
|
 |
|
The Commission on Elections has repeatedly
reminded that no officials, employees, teachers and members of the
Philippine National Police shall be transferred to another area
effective September 29 until November 13, 2007. The ban is covered by
the Civil Service Laws in connection with the coming barangay and SK
elections on October 29.
It was learned that the reassignment of PSI
Reynaldo Maclang from the Dipolog City Police Office to Camp Hamac,
Sicayab has not been covered yet by the COMELEC ban considering that his
relief was made before September 29. Although PSI Maclang’s lawyer Atty.
Kenneth Rosal claimed that the former could be reinstated anytime soon
COMELEC disclosed this could no longer happens since it has been covered
within the election period already.
Source disclosed that Mayor Evelyn Uy met with the wife
of Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita to ask her help for the
reinstatement of PSI Maclang. However, the Police Inspector has been
with the Police Provincial Office at Camp Hamac, Sicayab until today and
no confirmed reports as to his reinstatement disclosed.

THE
PANGE EXPERIENCE
by Don Gurrea |
|
 |
|
As a cultural worker, I had the opportunity
to visit for the first time Barangay Pange in Siayan last September 21,
2007. The name of that barangay was derived from a tree known by the
Subanen as pange. Barangay Pange is one of the 16 barangays created
during the declaration of Siayan as municipality on January 23, 1967.
About 38 kilometers from Siayan proper, Pange is situated along the
Provincial boundary between the provinces of Zamboanga del Norte and
Zamboanga del Sur. It is bounded on the north by Barangay Macasing,
Siayan; on the east by the Municipality of Midsalip, Zamboanga del Sur;
on the south by the Municipality of Lakewood, Zamboanga del Sur; and on
the west by Barangay Guibo, Siayan. With a population of about 1,100
and situated in one of the most rugged terrains in Zamboanga peninsula,
Pange is known to be the poorest barangay in the country without
passable roads, no electricity, no potable water system, and no health
and Daycare centers. Being geographically remote and almost inaccessible
to public transportation, Pange is also socio-economically vulnerable to
anti-government insurgency. As a cultural bearer, one of my main
concerns is the preservation of the Subanen cultural heritage.
Ninety-nine percent of residents in Pange are Subanen by blood yet,
Subanism is hardly felt in that area except for the language spoken to
communicate with each other.
Their colorful traditional costumes and
unique cultural implements are now just relegated to mere ceremonial
functions. Although, occasionally they perform traditional Subanen
rituals like Buklog, Pakano, Gampang and other ceremonies, they have
become lack-luster, less colorful, intensity-waning and there is a
notable decline in participation especially among the younger
generation. These cultural deteriorations are attributed mainly to
acculturation, religious assimilation and lack of understanding and
support for the Subanen culture and heritage. When GOVERNOR ROLANDO E.
YEBES went to Barangay Pange last September 21 to celebrate his 58th
birthday, he instantly made a historical footnote being the "first
Governor to visit Barangay Pange in Siayan". And consistent with his
slogan "Una sa Tanan, Ang Katawhan", the Governor went to Pange not only
to celebrate his birthday. Provincial Information Officer and CDAU Head
RONILO C. PACILAN pointed out that it was part of a bigger scheme "to
reach out and connect", solidifying the foundation of the community
towards progress. First and foremost, was the presence of the Provincial
Health Office led by DR. CARMENCITA P. ICAO to activate health and
sanitation services? Other basic programs brought to Pange under the "Tabang
ni Lando sa Communidad" (TLC) include Agricultural Programs, Social and
Cultural Services, Nutrition, Medical Services and Lando-BIBO, and other
extended services.
Witnessing the real educational situation in the barangay,
Public School Division Superintendent HABIB ADZHAR H. SARAHADIL declared
on the spot to add more teachers and classrooms for the growing number
of school children in that area. The road to Barangay Pange is the
principal witness to the people's socio-cultural, political, economic,
and religious situation. That same road brought Government officials and
employees as well as private leaders and organizers to see for
themselves the realities, experiences, the labors and aspirations of the
community. The long and winding road ends in Pange, but definitely, it
is not the end of the promise for a brighter future.

Indigenous Peoples’ Visual Art Show and
Competition OUTLINE OF EVENTS |
|
|
|
 |
|
In celebration of the National Indigenous
Peoples' Month in October, the Kalinawa Art Foundation in partnership
with the Zamboanga del Norte Federation of Visual Artists, Inc. (ZANFEVA),
hosted the "2nd Annual Indigenous Peoples' Visual Art Show and
Competition" on October 1 to 8, 2007 at the Goodtimes Cafe, Biasong,
Dipolog City. The opening of the said art event was graced by Dipolog
City Mayor EVELYN T. UY, Provincial Tourism Officer Atty. IVAN PATRICK
A. ANG representing Governor ROLANDO E. YEBES, Zamboanga del Sur
Vice-Governor ROSELLER L. ARIOSA, Kalinawa Art Foundation Senior Advisor
CARLTON B. HUGHES, and ZANFEVA Vice-President VICENTE C. LAPUT, JR.
Messages of appreciation and commendation
were delivered by Mayor EVELYN UY, Vice-Governor ROSELLER ARIOSA, and
Atty. IVAN PATRICK ANG during the opening program. Cultural and
traditional performances were also presented by the DUMENDENGAN ARTISTS
GUILD from Pagadian, Zamboanga del Sur, TRIBU DIPAG of Dipolog City, and
the "Barangay Cogon Subanen Performers". In particular, Atty. Ivan
Patrick A. Ang was elated by the fact the Kalinawa Art Foundation is
initiating art activities that give due recognition to the Indigenous
Artists, almost neglected by other sectors. Atty. Ang also confirmed
that the Visual Arts is an effective vehicle to convey the survival of
Indigenous Peoples.
36 Indigenous Artists coming from different
areas in Zamboanga del Norte, and guest artists from Zamboanga del Sur
enlisted for the exhibit. 115 visual artworks comprised the entire
showcase which was categorized into Traditional, Youth, 3-Dimentional
Open, and 2-Dimensional Open. Cash prizes were likewise awarded to
deserving winning entries. Judging the Art Competitions are VICENTE C.
LAPUT, JR., EMMA B. PRIMA, J. KIM O. BATULA, CHOI T. WILLKOM and KU T.
GAMALINDA.
Aside from community sale and public viewing
of artworks, there was also the uploading of artists' biographical and
art pieces' data for the Kalinawa Art Foundation's website (www.kalinawa.com).
An on-line auction of artworks was also undergone through eBay.com.
Corollary to the entire project, offside events were also presented by
renowned personalities. MR. NESTOR HORFILLA, a Davao-based artist,
researcher, theater director, scriptwriter, teacher and administrator,
presented "Organizing and Curating Indigenous Peoples' Focused Events
and Exhibition, Insights on Process and Outputs".

On the other offside event, MR. WILFRIDO
ARSENA, visual artist and researcher/writer based in Zamboanga City,
lectured on the "Intangibility of Art and the Tangible Need of the
Artist". The Closing and Awarding Ceremonies were as colorful as the
Opening Ceremony. City Information Officer ATTY. ALANIXON A. SELDA, as
speaker for the occasion, delivered among other concerns, a substantial
account on the typical life of an artist outlined in socio-cultural
history. The ceremony was also high lightened by the performance of
ORCHID STRINGS - Zamboanga del Norte National High School Rondalla
conducted by MR. JAY SARITA and trained by MRS. MARINA OMISOL. Tribu
Dipag contributed some musical and performance pieces complimenting the
traditional dance and music by the Barangay Cogon Subanen Group.
CURATOR'S NOTE
The "2nd Indigenous Peoples' Visual Art Show
and Competition" in Dipolog City aims to achieve a more comprehensive
collection of traditional and contemporary visual art works by the
Subanens, Kalibugans and Muslim groups residing within the Zamboanga del
Norte province. As the art event focuses on the indigenous person as
artist and creator, the choice of a subject matter or theme and
preference to material or medium used are for each individual
participant to decide.
Several indigenous artists from all over the
province were previously informed and consulted, and invited and
encouraged to participate in the event. The exhibition becomes a
showcase of various expressions and manifestations by both seasoned and
upcoming artists. Consequently, the curatorial format flows
spontaneously, yet, with focus on the total visual impact rather than
categorizing the items on the basis of theme, medium, and other
classifications. From the simple square-sized "Nigo" from Paranglumba,
Siayan and wood carvings from Marupay, Jose Dalman, to the more
intricate bamboo totem poles from Dipolog City, creativity and
imagination are artistically expressed. The paintings rendered in
various modes and presentations, also compliment the art pieces done in
the traditional manner.
This Indigenous Peoples' Visual Art Show is not only a
presentation of tangible and concrete cultural implements and
ornamentations; it also creates the possibility of a venue for the
expression and communication of unique and enduring traditions. As such,

The MIRACLE OF THE SUN

Today October 13, 2007. And before me is a
book worth reading and re-reading. But because we can not reproduce “in
whole or in part by any means without prior permission from the
publisher”, let me just summarize some pertinent passages. They have
relevance with what’s going on in this world this is about the
apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima, Portugal, ninety years ago.
· 1916 – The Angel of Peace appeared before
the three children Lucia, Francesco, and Jacinta. First in spring, then
summer, then autumn. On these three occasions, the angel exhorted them
to “pray, pray, and pray for peace.”
· 1917 – May 13. A lovely Lady appeared
where the children were playing. The lady told them not to be afraid
for no harm will come to them. “I am from Heaven,” she said Lucia asked
what she waned of them. She replied that they come on the thirteenth
day. For six months at this same time, and the she will tell them who
she is and what she wants.
· 1917 – June 13. The Lady appeared for the
second time. Lucia asked what she wanted of her. She told them to come
on the thirteenth of the next month. . . Pray the Rosary.
· 1917 – July 13. The Lady appeared again
over the oak tree. The same question was asked by Lucia, and the Lady
gave the same answer; in addition to saying that Francesco and Jacinta
will be taken to heaven soon. (The two died 1919 and 1920). And the war
would end. Continue praying. She promised that in October she would
tell them who she was and what she wanted.
· 1917 – August 19. The Lady appeared. The
children were kidnapped by the local authorities to prevent them from
going to the COVA on the thirteenth. Lucia asked what the Lady wanted.
“I want you to come to the COVA on the thirteenth and to continue
praying.” She promised to perform a miracle in October.
· 1917 – September 13. The Lady appeared. “Continue
praying to end the war.” So, in October 13, 1917, the Lady appeared
asking the people to pray and pray. And she told them she was (and
still is ) the Lady of the Rosary. Continue praying. The war is going
to end. . . and at the next moment the MIRACLE OF THE SUN was seen by
50,000 to 70,000 people who gazed the whirling sun plummeting down to
earth. . . terrified cries for mercy!!! . . . . . Maybe it’s much better
we read the book, and learn more.

“Mothers: Fountain of Love; Fountain of

This week, I will give way to the winner of
the “3RD DAHUNOG SA DIPOLOG On the Spot English Essay Writing
Competition” held in Cogon-Eco Park , Dipolog City last September 26. I
was fortunate to read all 14 essays and it’s great to know that the
teachers handling these kids are actually doing a decent job in
preparing their students for the event. However, some just made too much
preparation that their participants were too out-of-line in their
pieces, making me think, “they must have prepared this a day before the
event.” The theme goes something like this, “Giving Birth is a gift of
Love”, yet some kids had flawless grammar-wise essays that were all
about Dipolog Tourism.
Yours truly cannot possibly put into words
my feeling after being chosen by City Information officer, Atty.
Alanixon A. Selda as one of the four people to judge the said event,
together with such respected personalities such as Honorable Eustolia J.
Mata, Honorable Chandler Ruiz and Mr. Czarito Boy Zamora. Just sitting
beside these people is the ultimate high for a young writer such as me.
I cannot thank Mister Zamora, Sir Chandler and Ma'am Mata for the
gesture they had toward a rookie such as me. Now enough of that, this
column is all about the new breed of soon-to-be writers. The winner of
the contest is Charmagne D. Francisco of Punta National High School.
Here is her winning piece. Read on…
“Every 20 minutes, 3500 babies are born;
3500 lives are exposed to the world. Likewise, 3500 lives of mothers are
at stake. Mothers who lovingly and caringly carried their babies for
nine long months in their wombs. Mothers - They are the ones who give us
their unceasing love and care as long as they live. In a beauty pageant,
a contestant was asked, “What is the essence of being a woman?”, and
then she answered, “The essence of being a woman is being a mother.
Being a mother brings out what a woman has to give; love, care and
understanding for her family. It is a great honor for us women to be the
source of love and life.”
True. Even from the time when God created
the world, a woman “Eve” played a vital role. From being the loving wife
of his husband, to being the mother of her children. Playing two or more
roles at a time is not easy. Women, especially mothers, are all trying
their best to play their roles, well. At this point, we can call our
mothers “Super heroines” of our lives. Since the day our mothers knew
they are carrying a life or lives in their wombs, they already are our
savior. Imagine avoiding many things just to keep us safe. From the
things they eat, their habits, the way they move and even the way they
dress-up and how they look are all changed because of us.
When the time came for us to see the world,
our mothers suffered from pain and agony. They held their breaths for
us; they placed their lives at stake for us. Minutes after, our voices
are heard. We took our first breath of the Earth’s air. Happiness and
joy fill our mothers’ hearts. Truly, GIVING BIRTH IS A GIFT OF LOVE.

The
Turning Point
Edwin G. Bernido
What Must We Do To Inherit Eternal Life? |
|
 |
|
The Christian life begins with surrender to
the lordship of Jesus Christ. His coming into the world, His death on
the cross and His resurrection from the dead was in order to establish a
relationship with man in which the surrender of man and the lordship of
Christ would be fundamental. In Romans 14:9, says, Christ died and rose
again for this very purpose, so that He might be Lord of those who are
alive and those who have died.
Paul also wrote, and He died for all. That
those who live should no longer live for themselves but for Him who died
for them and was raised again (2 Corinthians 5:15) Here, in this verse
we can see the basic problem with some people, they wanted Christ as
their servant, but not their master. They wanted Christ to meet their
need, but not to tell them what to do. There is no experience of God on
these situations. If someone comes to Christ and say in effect, I want
you to be Lord of my life, to tell me what to do and how to live, that
person will receive from the Lord Jesus Christ precisely nothing.
There is the idea that there are two kinds
of Christian. There is the average Christian, who knows Christ as
saviour, whose past sins have been forgiven and they will go to heaven
when they die. But there is also a super de luxe version where a person
takes it all much further and has Christ not just as saviour but as
Lord. The basic issue we must face and come to terms with is the role
of Jesus Christ as Lord, and in consequence of that we will begin to
experience His work as saviour.
What do we mean when we speak of the
Lordship of Jesus Christ in our lives? We are not talking about a
relationship where there are no tensions. Everything is well and we are
approaching something akin to sinlessness. We are not even talking
about being filled with the Holy Spirit, as though that were a synonym
for knowing Christ as Lord. We are talking about and understanding of
Him that leads to an attitude towards Him.
In Acts 2:36, says, so let it be clearly
known by everyone in Israel that God has made this Jesus whom you
crucified to be both Lord and Messiah. The apostle Peter state, He is
Lord, not because we make Him Lord, , but because God has made Him
Lord. The result of Jesus, life, work, death resurrection and
exaltation to the right hand of God is that He has been made Lord, and
therefore it is as Lord that we must come to terms with Him.

Good day Philippines and Hello ZaNorte!
Christmas is on the air. I know that each one is now preparing their
Christmas shopping list for their loved ones despite the fact that , we
are much affected by the present economic crisis. We should not give up
but struggle instead. And CHUCHAK never stops!!! (Hehehe) And the
winners are… (May I have the envelope please?) Let’s get it on!
Ø I heard that Tita Macleng will be back
here in Dipolog. Ayyyy… na miss niya si Joseph Tirada? Perti jud ni si
Madame Simangot mura jud ug tralala. Bisan gisuka na jud si Tita sa mga
tawo kay walay maayong pamunuan.. Naunsa man ka Madam oi?? Unsa gud diay
plano nimo?
Yebes. Mao
nana, kay inyong amo before wala may DAGKONG accomplishments. Pahuway
mga ORI!!! (GFH?)
Ø Kaning UBANG mga regular engineers sa PEO
kay mga abusado noh? Relax ra kaayo ang mga beauty, sige gihapon ug
panaway sa administrasyon kay mao lage nahanaw na ang ilang amo nga maoy
nagpahimo nilang hayop aw tawo diay.
Hoyy. Pagkatapos nag-TRAYDOR imo
fafa ni Gov. Lando, ana na dayon kasayon? Hadlok na ka? Gipangandaman na
ra ba kuno ka Madam ug kontra karong 2010. AKO, ang moparang nimo noh?
Tan-awon ta ug kinsay WAFA natong duha beh!!!!
Ø You know what naa juy nangataranta diha sa
PGO kay si Madam Charing (nailad ko sa buing?) sige tawon ug hire ug
personal agent aron mahibaw-an ang writer aning CHUCHAK? Trabaho nalang
ug tinarong diha oi… Kay ug wala pa unta mo nag-abusar, this COLUMN will
not be born. Be friendly na Madam sa mga tawo ha, ilabi na sa mga
KAPITAN nga mas naghago pa nimo nga modaog imo BOSS… di lalim ning
pataka ta ug lupad. (Flying without wings is dangerous.. bwahahahahaha?
Ø I appreciate the editorial last week
entitled “How could the Governor be alone in the middle of the Crowd” In
fairness to the good Governor, he has done so much for the province of
ZaNorte. Only few men and women at the provincial capitol have
contributed good programs for his prestigious awards received recently
even if he’s neophyte in politics. I guess, the Governor is too much
good to his subordinates.
politika, in other words taga laing planeta (KOKEY?) Manghinambog pa jud
sila nga makatrabaho ra man lage bisan wala sila musuporta ni Lando last
election. (BM Bigote ikaw ba to?)
Ø BONUS na pod hapit sa mga regular ug
plantilla employees. Happy na ako mga friends diha sa kapitol kay ihatag
man jud ni Gov. Lando ang inyong mga benefits, unlike sa CITY nga uhaw
intawon sa mga benipisyo ang mga empleyado. (Na botar man gud mo ni
Madam Simangot) MERISI!!!
Ø PEDO PEOPLE? I will send my BUTTERFLY
agents soon. So behave!!!
Ø Gikapoy na ko ug chismiz oi…. I’ll be back next week
for another REVELATION!!! I’ll see you around. Sige BYE!!!

Little Giants
|
|
 |
|
I was
awed by the characters of a Hollywood movie that portrayed children
rising from great hurdles and won big breaks in the climactic “Little
Giants” movie. It was a great and inspiring cinematic feat. They stand
tall because of their resolve and consistency despite of their young age
they were taught of skills only a mature man can grasp. It has
ultimately pushed them to triumph. They stand tall because the crowd
made them what they are, little giants. Incredible kids with awesome
nerve of steel, that what made them big in the eyes of the people that
surrounds them. They earned it anyhow.
On the other side of the coin, some people
would pretend to be big, thinking they’re in the league of giants. They
wanted to be big, influential and important despite of a bereft stature.
They would wield their borrowed power to realize it. These are matured
people who would act like children. These are wannabes who will just
ride a carabao and feel he’s more than the carabao; these people would
make your life miserable because they would impose their will upon you
to make that fantasy more realistic. They are like flies too that would
fester your life’s existence.
Well, some people just wanted to feel that
they have power over people, you can find them everywhere, in the market
place, in public places, especially in air-conditioned office rooms, and
they thrive in government offices. Take for instance in the capitol, at
the administrator’s office a fly there is wreaking havoc on the
governor’s men, his caprice is being tolerated by his boss, that’s why
he is playing important and influential all the time. A pity to this
man. His boss and the rest of the little giants therein are making too
much division at the capitol; the governor will soon realize that the
reasons are the too much bullying of this office towards the other.
Watch out.
At the City Hall, also at the
administrator’s office, a fly is making the dead rot because they don’t
want to bury the dead poor man at a city cemetery because of political
reason. These flies are liars and inhuman, they don’t respect your dead,
not even God. God forgive them. At the church, a top clergy plays God by
absolving Maclang of his sin, despite Maclang’s arrogance. Is he God?
His clergymen according to sources are not happy about their top pastor.
I have not heard a single word from this top priest when one dead man
couldn’t find his resting place. Is this heaven or hell?
At the Sangguniang Panlungsod, buzzing flies
there abound. They just wanted to be on league with their boss, they
wanted to look good not in the eyes of their constituency but only to
one iron lady. No matter what it takes, they would even wipe the big
asses of their bosses, classic slave and master relationship, kawawa ang
Pinoy. We have lost our remaining respect to their honorable standing.
How can these city dads becoming dud? At the Sangguniang Panlalawigan?,
oh boy, we have friends who sometimes forget that public service is an
opportunity not a luxury. Thinking and feeling big is poisonous, it
could wipe away the remaining humility in us.
The reality is, we’re just a dot. . Tayo’y tuldok lang.
. . . Said the famous Asin, we are the giant in our own little
universe. Or let’s say, don’t compare your self to others; it could be
you are most likely the better or some other will shadow your
brilliance. The secret in this world is humility and un-proclaimed
excellence, some one could notice that? You could be the real little
giant of that box office movie, striking awe even at a distance.

The hobble bubble about Dipolog City Police
Senior Inspector Reynaldo Maclang is enough to make us squirm in
desperation and compassion. Earlier, some of his actions were perceived
as beyond reasons that some Dipolognons could not just take: from
mistakenly arresting an innocent mechanic to cutting off the hair of
detained suspects which climaxed into the mauling of a civilian. The
latest incident, the mauling that is, prodded a group of local media men
to press for his oust from the Dipolog Soil.
And that also prompted his reassignment to
the Provincial Police Office in Sicayab. But it did not end there. It
did not silence the uproar because his protector lashed back. Dipolog
City Mayor Evelyn Uy and her gang could not just let go an important
gentleman. Signatures have been gathered, from the business community to
local barangay officials. A resolution has been passed to bring him
back to the fold. A letter to PGMA has even been penned to retain him
here.
In so short a time, PSI Maclang’s presence in Dipolog
City has invited a rift in the city community. Not the gentleman’s
fault, though. He could just be a man caught in a political limbo and
intrigue. If this is so, we cannot just go pecking at one another like
vultures over a carcass. The man has been grilled, humiliated, ridiculed
and judged despite the dedication he believed he has for his job. It’s
time to set him free. Dipolog may not a place carved for him.
